When i rev my car up the exhaust sounds great but as the rpm's work back down it makes a popping noise? what is causing this to happen?
Thanks

It's a backfire and I don't know of anyone who doesn't have it, in neutral at least.

Its just a muffler that i got at autozone. it has a four inch tip and sounds great. except for the noise

sounds like it might be misfiring. check your wires.

could it have something to do with back pressure that the car is giving off because of the switching of the exhaust????
It happens on mine sometimes while downshifting.

If you backfire when you're shifting, and running really rich you should rig it up to shoot flames. Cool stuff

it's just the back pressure. i have it really bad on my 92 2 liter. personally i like it, sounds kinda like a race car when i wind it up then back off and the exhaust starts popping and crackling. not really sure how you'd fix it.

Yeah my 93 2.0 has it too, but its not loud, just a quiet crackling when the engine is decelerating quickly.

decelerating pop is caused from a lean mixture most all fuel injected cars do it because the injectores back off the amount of fuel when the TB is closed .If you lightly feather the gas while decelerating you can get some real loud pops and some flames because you are dumping more fuel in then dropping to a lean mixture again!

So is there any fix to this problem?

Not that I know of.
Im running just a cat (no muffler) and full 2" and mine really is loud and spits flames etc.I have been told there is a fuel/air monitor thing you can buy and hook it up ,Im not sure if this will allow you to adjust the mixture or not if it would that would work.

There is a way to do it, however, you'd need to buy an AFC - I dont remember who exactly makes them, but they arent cheap. Like $500! DSMs seem to be so strange at times, like naturally my NT ran too rich, so rich it blew a crap load of smoke, so I opened up the intake and lowered the backpressure with a slightly larger then normal exaust system, and it stopped blowing smoke instantly, and I notice better power and better milage... but I never noticed any backfiring/ popping, and I checked, I'm good for that. Who knows...
