This car is at a dealer for 1495, its got 152k miles, and its a 5 speed. There is a couple dings on the car, but its pretty perfect looks wise. The dealer has told me that the car's shifter will slip out of 4th and return to neutral. This is where my question comes in. The dealer states that the car will be able to last a while before the tranny needs a rebuild.

I have seen on here that you can open the tranny and tighten some nuts to help 5th gear slippage. I have also read a little on how special tranny oil blends would help... and I know that it could also be the linkage. I do not know without looking and fiddling with the car. Since its at the dealer I can't fiddle with the car.

I am looking for an honest opinion from everyone on wether I should purchase the car or not. WOuld it be worth it to haggle the price down to something better?

The VIN# is 4E3CS44R2LE060644 I would do a carfax on it, but I need to get more cars to check. I would rather pay the 25$ for unlimited checks at 30$ then pay 20$ for a single car.

Anyways I am new to posting her, but have spent several days manually searching for help on the issue.

thanks for any input.

Probably needs the synchro, the hub and slider for fourth gear. Buy the car, pull the trans and have the trans done up right.

If the car runs fine and is in good mechanical conditiob otherwise, sure.

Kinda strange to have a 4th gear issue. Most have 1/2.

I agree with van it more than likely needs the 4th gear hub and slider and new syncro but i am sure that it also needs gone through and freshened up. I would bet all internal parts are worn but only have the 4th gear issue right now. Worst case scenario you build a trans, god knows you will need it anyway. As far as the price it is not bad to get you started and you can build from that platform.

Does the car have a cold air intake. Sometimes, if I'm in a rush, I won't get mine back on just right and it will kick itself out of 4th and reverse. All my problem is that the shifter arm hits the CAI and won't let the trans go all the way into gear. Just something to look at.
