Ive beatin alot of cars actually with my 1.8L. All I have is an intake. I guess the 5-spd helps too. Off the top of my head: My friend had a riced-out 88 Civic... Killed him. Another friend has a 95 Talon N/T 5-spd w/ intake & exhaust... Beat him by about 1 car length. Ive tied a friend's 2001 Malibu. Cousin has a riced out 96 Accent 5-spd... Beat him by about 2 cars. Barely beat a pre-99 Grand Am GT (hwy race). Ive gotten killed alot, but mostly by V-8 guys I mess with. But... Ive said it before, and Ill say it again. I think I have a freak 1.8L. I cant believe what my car does sometimes. Im not sayin that I can beat a Turbo or V-8 or anything, but my car really holds-its-own.

Closest race i have had was with my friends Monte Carlo. It has a 305 in it. i get him off the line and get about 2 cars usually cuz hes there spinnin and then he pulls on me. I can beat him on the highway though :-)

Ive been driving my car around out back in a field where Ive been working on it at. It seems like it has more power than 92. It spins those tires like your wont believe (fwd).
It also gets up and goes to.

I know a guy that goes to the local track that has a 1.8 auto and runs steady 21's (ouch). well he makes money in the brackets because he allways runs the same time. hell he gets like 4&5 second head starts and by the time the other lane gets to go they have to bust ass to catch up. not flamin on the 1.8 crowd but its funny as hell to watch. i never seen a 13 sec mustang owner get so mad in my life.

The wierdest one had to be the race with the 95 N/T. My bud had an intake & Pacestter exhaust w/o muffler. I really though he was goin to kill me. Especially cause he has a 5-spd and he has like 40+ more HP. It was a perfect 1/4 mile race. It was awesome, cause it was like dead-even through 1st gear. We even shifted at the same time. 2nd gear, his front was at my door. When I hit 3rd he just about evened it. By the time I redlined in 3rd, his front was at my rear. When we finshed, seconds later, he was just behind me. It was a great race. 1G vs. 2G.

My auto 1.8L won't even beat a 2.0L sunbird. Any 1.8's that think they can take a 2.0 are MORE than welcome to try my Talon with a blown headgasket, because after having both, I KNOW my 2.0 is noticeably faster.
If you have a 1.8, and say you beat a 2.0 (With more mod's both 5spd's) it's either:
A) Bullshit
B) The guy shifted at 4000RPM
I'm sorry, I have a 1.8 AND a 2.0 NT and there is a WORLD of difference between the two. When I would rev my 1.8, about the only car I would take are old Sundances/Shadows.

Well the 95 that I BEAT was a 5-spd, had air intake, and an exhaust. Which is more than my 5-spd with intake. So, you make the call. Not B.S. Ill even tell the guy to post it up on the board that I beat him.

My friend bought a 2001 Cavalier Z24 about 2 months ago. Every once in a while, we talk about racing. So today we're playin b-ball, and we're gettin ready to leave and he says, "Your not goin home, your goin to race." So Im like, OK. We go to this place where everyone races called Co-Gen road (perfect 1/4 mile). We get there and a 3rd friend goes to the end to see the finish. We count to 3 and take off. I had him good on the start. Into 2nd and I still have him. As Im shifting to 3rd, he starts to pass me. He gets about 3/4 of a car on me as I top out in 3rd. I hit 4th for about 2 seconds, and then had to slow down. He ended up beating me by about 3/4 of a car. Not bad, considering he has about 55 HP on me.

Do the math on the horse-power. Unless the guys you race can't shift/aren't trying/miss shifts/etc... there is no way you'll beat them in a ~100HP DSM.
Maybe you do beat them, but I know that my 2.0 with a blown headgasket can whip my 1.8 pretty damn good. And the 1.8 is in awesome mechanical shape. So I can't really picture the 1.8 beating anything that great really...

If it has a blown head gasket, you probably shouldn't be racing anything. Get the gasket replaced before you ruin your head/block!
I agree with you about the 2.0 killing the 1.8. A local 1.8 (5 speed) raced a riced out 90' cavalier (auto) and lost by about 4 car lengths, then i raced the cavalier and won by 5 car lengths. Maybe he does have a freak 1.8 though?
Why did they even have to make a 1.8!?!....if they would have just stuck with the 2.0 as the smallest motor everyone would be better off (cause everyone would have a 2.0, and autozone would stop giving me the wrong parts!).

good question.....WHY THE HELL DID THEY MAKE A 1.8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 1.8 was because they wanted the 'economy' model like a Hyundai Accent -lol. But they did. Anyway, Yes, I do see a 1g 1.8 Beating a 2g 2.0NT. I've gone against 2g NTs with my 1gNT and There is a huge difference across the board. Like I hav an A/T andI can hit 90mph at 2500 rpms, when most 5speed 2g are hitting 80 at 3500prm or more! The 1gs also dont have crankwalk :) And so they look a little worse - who cares! The 1.8's do have a lot less HP but there is a reason other then the fact that the people they race cant drive. The simple weight beetween a 2.0 and the 1.8 makes a decent difference. But hey, more power to you, and yes, those headlights kick ass! DSM 2.0 or 1.8, kick @$$!

Ghoste - You're seriously thinking you can beat a 94 Camaro? Aren't those the new style ones, with around 200HP? And I hope the "I'll take him in the top end" was really a joke...
Trust me, don't put ANY money on those races, and make sure no chicks are around because you'll get pumped.

the reason why I said Top end , is because he is scard to go over 80 :)
I know I couldnt beat a camaro.

The 94 Camaro's only had 165 HP i think. Plus, their boats. I would think a N/T with a 5-spd would beat one.

well , Ill floor my a/t to beat him , Im also alot lighter than him :)

True: the 1.8L Eclipse is pretty light
True: the 1.8L Eclipse is still amazingly slow
True: the 1.8L Eclipse is NOT to be raced
Before you think I'm just some guy with a turbo causing trouble, I owned and drove daily a 1992 1.8L Eclipse GS Auto for about 1 1/2 years, so I know what I'm talking about. my Eclipse had every option except leather, but was stuck with the 1.8L engine (bought it when I was a clueless 18-yr old). The only performance mod I did was hack the aircan and throw on a K&N filter. I've also driven a friend's 1990 1.8L Eclipse 5-speed, and that car was noticeably quicker than my auto, but only marginally so.
First of all, Trevor K has a point - I simply CANNOT see a 2GNT losing to a 1G 1.8L UNLESS something was wrong with the 2GNT. Mindblowin03, I believe that you BEAT the 2GNT, but rest assured that something was wrong with the 2GNT, period. I've seen 2GNT's - with only a K&N and a cat-back exhaust - run 10's in the eighth-mile, which is roughly equivalent to a mid-15 sec quarter mile. Even with a 50-shot of NOS, I don't know if the 1.8L could manage a time like that.
When I had my 1.8L, I raced a friends 1993 Camry LE 4-door automatic, which is supposed to do 0-60 in roughly 11 seconds, and the quarter mile in the low 18's. We were both alone in our respective cars, and from 0-60 he put about 2 cars on me. I don't even want to know what the entire quarter mile race would've looked like, it would've been a murder.
I also raced my friend's 1992 Chevy Z71 Truck 5-speed. He had a passenger but I was alone. We raced from roughly from 0-60 also (both of these races occured in 40 mph zones), and this race was almost dead even ... until about 50 mph, then he started inching ahead of me. This was extremely embarrassing, losing to a f'in truck, so I shut down pretty quickly.
my very first race in the 1.8L was against a early-90's 240SX. This was the first night I had my 1.8L Eclipse after buying it, so I was pumped up. I rolled up on him at a light, and cockily put in in neutral and revved at him. I couldn't see through the tinted windows, but he revved back at me. Once the light went green, we went and he put about 4 cars on me up to about 80 mph. I was pissed, but soon became accustomed to losing in that car. :(
1G 1.8L Eclipes are great cars, don't get me wrong. I absolutely loved mine, with the exception of the engine. I ended up putting some 17x7.5 Mille Miglia Glide II's on that Eclipse, 2 10"s in the hatch, an Eclipse head unit and some blue headlights. I kept it clean, and was big-pimpin' in it :) But, I knew full well, if anyone ever revved at me, to simply smile and ignore them. :) If it's slow enough that my ex-girlfriend, who drove a 1994 Ford Explorer V6, complained how slow my car is, then it's pretty damn slow. :)

ForestTalonAWD... The only thing I can do is agree with you. Even when I think of it, there is no way I shouldve beaten him. But, I did. We were friends, and we talked about it afterwards. He couldnt believe I beat him either. Other than that, I dont know what to say.

Thank-you ForestTalon, finally someone who agrees a 1.8L DSM isn't a DSM you should race.
