how is the zip code distance figured out?

Not sure what you are asking but distance approximation is determined by the zipcode info you have in your user profile.

i dont see the zip code box any where, i go to User CP, edit profile, no zip code info...?

I was just wondering, because is says some one was 77 miles away from me and their in NC, and I am in Ohio!

Only I and a couple Moderators can view/change that info. What particular ad are you seeing this discrepancy?

The zip code in your profile is correct. It is possible that the zip in the other user's profile is incorrect. If it is accurate, then it is a flaw in the zip code database that is causing that innacuracy with mileage. If you PRIVATE MESSAGE me the username of the user account in question, I will verify that their zip is correct.

Both zips check out OK. I think mileage is calculated via longitude and latitude so the coordinates associated with that user's zip must be wrong. Eventually we will correct these on a cases by case basis.
