After I had a Alpine CDA-7839 installed (replaced factory cassette Infinity) it actually sounds worse. Not horrible, but less clear I guess. Is the factory cassette only head unit that much better than the Alpine, or does the Alpine I have just suck? (It's about 2yrs old now).

2nd, I read that the stock 210w amp isn't used anymore when you replace the factory head unit, is this true? Could be why the Alpine sounds worse?

3rd, I read somethin about a adapter (at sounddomain.com)that could be used to use the amp in conjunction with a new head unit. I looked around a little on their site, but it's like a foreign language to me, could someone tell me, or give me a link to the adapter that would work for my 2g?

Thanx lots!

1st and 2nd: yes, when you go to a aftermarket head unit, your factory amp doesn't work, so you're going from say... 52.5 x 4 to probably 40 x 4. so it's not gonna sound as good, plus the factory head unit was made to be tuned for that car. a good crossover or eq on a better amp will solve that.

3rd: i've been wondering about an adapter too. I don't know of one, so if you find one, let me know.

I just ordered this from http://www.sounddomain.com for my 97 GS-T so that I can use a new head unit and keep the stock amplifier (for now at least). I hope this does what it describes.

When it says...

Applications:
• Mitsubishi built cars 1990-1998 with Infinity system.

I'm guessing that includes '99 as well, since there isn't any difference from a 97-99 is there?

I'm guessin' that it would work for the 99s, the item was probably made in 98 and the description was never updated.

btw, it just shipped today, should get it thursday.

Just to be on the safe side I emailed 'em and asked if that's what it will do (allow aftermarket head unit w/ factory amp) *crosses fingers* :D

Hey w1kk3d,
I have an Alpine CDA-7839 and I ordered that adapter today. I have a XM-3 Acoustic electronic X-over it has highs, mids, and sub outputs which can all be run off one input. I plan to hook the RCA outs of the adapter to the Xover to customize my sound. When I recieve it and do the install I'll post my results.

I've been installing for almost 20 years. Back in the day, we didn't have plugs and harnesses to convert after market radios to factory amps. We had to rely on good ol' "Electronics know-how". Anyone interested in saving a few bucks, E-mail me and I will send you the wiring to setup your after market radio with your factory amp.

I got a answer back from SoundDomain.com this morning:

Jeff,

You are absolutely correct - the MITAH will allow you to replace your factory head unit and keep your factory amplifier. Just make sure that whatever deck you get has 4 RCA pre-amp outputs (front and rear). The MITAH adaptor has 4 RCA inputs, and plugs right in to the factory Mitsubishi wiring harness.

I guess that solves that.

Do you guys have any wiring specs/diagrams for the MITAH adapter? Mine came with absolutely nothing. I've just installed Aiwa MP3 player and tried to connect it to the stock amp - doesn't seem to work with the ad-hoc approach. The amp itself sounds alive (e.g., if I tap one of the inputs to a low voltage battery). I am starting to wonder if there's no pre-amp output signal from the player. Since the player and the amp are connected to speakers in parallel, the player w/o the amp is sounds fine, except that it doesn’t play anything to the front speakers (the ones on the dashboard). From what I understand, those are connected to the amp only, which means that the amp doesn’t kick in. Any advise on what may be wrong?
