The TCU (Transmission Control Unit) is behind the kick panel next to the gas pedal. What was the problem of the previous tranny???

I had similar problem with a 91 auto nt talon. It only had 3rd gear.

I bought a rebuilt tcu from a place in Tx. ECU to go($250). It fixed that problem.

That was a year ago. Now it seems that the tcu is out again, and trans is shot, (according to a Mitsu dealer tech). Also while cleaning the trans pan, I found metal pieces. Dealer said that the tcu can damage the trans if not working right. I'm not sure what broke the trans, and I'm not sure if the dealer tech is being straight or not. Now tlhe car will run, but no OD, and the trans slips in and out of gear. J

Just wanted to warn about reliable tcu remanufacturers, and driving with a bum tcu!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, rebuild the trans? used trans, or rebuilt.

I'm not sure what this forum would recommend about ecu and tcu rebuilds.

Good luck,
jc

Wierd. I have a '92 and just got finished swapping in a '91 tranny, and I only have second gear. I thought that the shifter cable needed adjusting, but that wasn't it either. trouble shooting continues....

To make a long story short, I had the same 2nd gear only problem after a trans swap. A very helpful tranny shop in Florida (Chet and Micks) told me it is called second gear start and is a default to protect the transmission from destroying itself. There are many electrical plugs going to the trans that are idiot proof,(round to round, triangle to triangle,etc...) but there are 2 different 4 wire connectors that can be plugged into the wrong place. I found the 2 connectors and switched them and everything works great.

Glen, I am in process of doing swap right now.

Which two plugs? Also, do you know which is the output on the trans for cooler lines? Which is input /output on the radiator?

I still have some bad old fluid in the cooler, that I'd like to flush before running the trans on the road.

Thanks,

jc
