I have done the swap, have everything back together, but the car wont start (the starter wont engage). I know there's a switch somewhere, or wires I can jumper together to make the starter circuit think the a/t is in "PARK" so that it will engage.
WHERE THE HELL IS THE WIRE HARNESS THAT I NEED TO JUMP THE WIRES, AND WHICH WIRES!!?!!??? I was using the 1G swap directions from the dsm.org vfaq's, but it doesnt say where these wires are located on the 2G.
Thanks in advance!!

for anyone using the search button looking for answers:
there is a shifter position sensor on the auto transmission directly under where the cable mounts. Its held on by 2 12mm bolts and one 14mm nut. plug that in the appropriate harness plug in your engine bay, turn the sensor (to put it in "park"), and viola, you have starter. if I ever figure out which wires, I'll post the info in this thread.
NOTE TO ANYONE DOING THE SWAP, YOU HAVE TO USE A M/T STARTER!!

woohoo! anyone that tells you to sell your car instead of doing the swap either:
a. has no mechanical ability/tools
b. does not have a computer to search for parts (I got EVERYTHING to do the swap for $600)
c. is lazy
The car feels SOOOOO much faster than when it was an auto.

Since you just did the swap, you probably know exactly what parts are needed!
This is what I got so far (all ripped out from two local 2G AWD Talons that got rear ended hardcore).
MT
MT starter
MT transfer case
MT flex plate
Clutch slave
Clutch master
Clutch fluid line
Clutch assembly
Shifter boot
Shifter assembly
Shifter cables
Flywheel
Pedal assembly (break and clutch, what a friggin bitch to rip out).
Stock 2G MT injectors
What am I missing?
BTW. Was there anything you ran into that was kinda unexpected (shit didn't fit right, different bolt patterns, wires that don't seem to do anything, weird crap like that). I hate finishing a project with a bunch of 'extra' parts

mind you, I only did the fwd swap, not AWD auto to manual.
You didnt mention a m/t rearend. The autos and manuals have different final drive ratios, so you cant use an auto rearend with a 5 speed tranny/x-fer case.. You will also need the m/t TOP and REAR bracket/mounts.
Your auto injectors are the same as the manual injectors. 1G's are different, but 2G's all used the same injectors for autos and manuals.
i've heard that the axles/cv joints are different from mt to at, but I used the at axles with no problems (yet), not sure if you'll be able to do that in an AWD swap.
Unexpected:
1. see first post. its easily overcome though
2. the ease (yeah, thas right) of putting in the pedals. the faq's (1G faq... I dont know of a 2G faq) make it sound much worse than it really is. cutting the hole for the master cylinder was cake... just drilled holes about every millimeter and knocked it out with a hammer, then filed it smooth. spent about 20 minutes max.
3. the shifter cables use the same route through the firewall as the auto cables... this is contrary to the 1G swap where you have to make a new hole.
4. no wires needed to be cut or spliced.
5. the m/t weighs atleast 90 lbs, versus the easily 200lb auto trans.
Thats all I can think of at the moment.

I believe that the wires you are looking for are on the wiring harness that goes after the ignition switch. But I am not sure which wires are those exactly. I will see if I can find some more info on this...
I actually weigh my tranny when it was out. Tranny with no fluid, TC, and with out being hooked up to the transfer was 230lbs!! Way heavier then a 5spd. I thought about the swap before but I really had good luck with the auto lately and I know I would trash clutches and center diffs with the way I drive.. Lets just say I love shifting at WOT and hard launches. That's awsome that you did it and can tell us about it.. Thanks.

ahhh crap...
I forgot the rear diff.
Is there any diff's in centre/front diff. between AT/MT? As far as I know there is no difference, only the rear for obvious reasons need's to be changed.
Front and center diff are totally different in the A/T. But they're in the tranny so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

last q! since i got an AT rear lsd, could i swap the gears out of a MT diff and put them into the AT rear lsd. This way I'd have my lsd still, and the proper gear ratios.
just one pain in the ass pin holding it together.

16G TSi, what the hell wires do I cut???

I'm not sure which wire it is, but its the BIG harness. The directions above are for removing the shifter sensor and plugging the harness in. It doesnt require cutting a wire.
On a side note, I suspect the reason peoples problems with their Cruise Control after the swap is related to this switch. Theres two wires for the c/c that tells the c/c unit that the tranny is in "Drive". I wish I could find a pin-out for this harness.....
