View Full Version : What kind of pistons?

BluePlymouth

Where can I get some aftermarket pistons that would up my compression? Is the gain worth the money? I'm also giving the machv rebuild kit a thought..although I rather have a higher compression. I'm wanting to get about 130 hp out of my 1.8L so I know this is all going to depend on the internals mainly. So let me know who would be a good company to go with for some pistons, rings, and rods. thanks

Ross Racing pistons can do it for 434.00 for all four pistons. Just tell them you want to go from 9:1 to 10:1, and they will increase the compression height on the pistons. I am not sure though if that will get you even to 130, it might be 10.5:1

Why not 12:1, pump gas can take at least 13:1 effective compression

fast1.8sohcDSM

Yeah, but once you go so high you have to pay an Arm and Leg in high octain gas.

ginsu417

You're actually advising someone against doing this just because they would have to run high octane? Explain to me how turbocharging your car is not increasing the effective compression - which is going to require you to do the same thing?

Its not cheap to go fast. The least of my worry is the cost of high octane gas. You have to pay to play, some things are cheaper than others, but its gonna cost you somewhere.

Kalani, simply he isn't going to get the horsepower upgrade as if he were forced induction. Why pay the price in gas without the power?

Instead of building my engine up with higher compression..should I just go turbo? the thing is..the guy who's working on my car doesn't know how do anything that's not in a illustrated mechanic book. He's doin this job for a GOOD price. So I figured go ahead and have him build this engine with a higher compression and just buy an AWD later. I love my 1.8..we've had alot of good times together..I just don't want to turbo it because it's too expensive. Unless one of you guys lived down here I'd do it. But instead I have to deal with these hillbillys workin on my car who can only go off of illustrated pictures. So what compression, what company, and how much am I looking at?

Ross Pistons, 12:1 like Kalani says I guess, with Ross Racing rings, and wrist pins, $530.

how can I get intouch with them? do you have a # or addy?

how much of a gain you think I'll have with those pistons, IndigoSpeed aluminum flywheel and ACT clutch, an injen air intake, 2 1/4" catback exhaust, and an AFC, and UR pullies, ignition system?

For every point change in the compression ratio your power output will change by 2%. The flywheel won't get you any horsepower. It will let you get to your peak horsepower faster. You won't notice the clutch either. The intake may get your 5-7 and the exhaust another 8 or 9. The AFC doesn't do anything for you unless you need more fuel. Even then, it doesn't add anything to your horsepower, it's simply a supporting fuel enrichment modification. The UR pullies will get you another 2 or 3% on top of everything else. Take note that changing your compression ratio will probably make your motor an interference motor.

BluePlymouth

Interference motor?

ginsu417
03-11-2003, 12:48 PM
Meaning if you snap your timing belt, you will bend all your valves.

ginsu417
03-11-2003, 01:21 PM
Valves get smashed to bits by an interference valvetrain out of sync... Next... on "Meet my pistons..." only on Fox... hehehehe

Kalani, even at that high of a compression, I doubt he would see a intake with that kind of horsepower upgrade, even an exhaust I doubt. I can see the compression making more horsepower, and maybe the VE modifications increasing the horsepower slightly, but I would say after Intake and Exhaust modifications, you would only see probably 5 HP max from both of them. The 1.8 with these modifications do not benefit much NT. I try to explain that to you people on here. I have drove one with and without, and the point to the matter is, my car drove about the same as one with an Injen intake. Point proven in the real world. I would say after you increase your compression, you will see a max hp at the same rate as a 4G63. And the worse part is, you won't have the same rpm redline.

The more efficiently an engine breathes, the harder it is to extract more power out of it without forced induction. The 1.8 will pick up more horsepower with intake and exhaust mods than a 4G63 because the 4G63 is already a more volumetricly efficient engine. Dyno proven.

BluePlymouth

So is uping my compression worth it?

if you guys were in my position what would you do? btw, what do you guys do for a living? are any of you mechanics?

Kalani, I drove the car. I think I would know.

And if I were in your position, I would look at a different route at going at this. If you want it to have alittle more horsepower, free up some weight by adding a unorthodox lightened crank pulley, but as for the Injen, from my own personal experience, on the 1.8 doesn't make a crap difference. It isn't worth it, and Kalani, if you want, fly down to Utah and I can show you on a NT 1.8.

For someone who's running a completely stock 1.8, you sure like to act like you know what you're talking about. Where are you dyno charts? Have you even been on a dyno? I have. And these are the results.

fast1.8sohcDSM
03-12-2003, 02:35 AM
Kalani, you have no idea what modifications I have done, for all you know I could be turbocharged already.

Next thing is I have had an Injen Intake on without exhaust, I took one off a 1.8 that was in my shop. IT DIDN'T DO A DIFFERENCE. You want my results, that is my driving results.

ginsu417
03-12-2003, 03:26 AM
I asked if you'd been on a dyno, not if you've driven a 1.8 with an intake and exhaust. You don't get accurate results by driving up and down the street and "racing from streetlight to streetlight". You get them on a chassis dyno. And if your tuning is anything like your timing FAQ, that would explain your results.

Your mods are in your signature. Nothing. Just "future mods". And if it wasn't for my research and development, you wouldn't have anything under that either. Does everyone here remember what I said about standing on the shoulders of geniuses and pissing on the folks who got you there? You don't contradict someone with 10 times more tuning experience than you. The next time you need something for your turbo 1.8, I'd suggest you ask someone else. And since there is no one else, I guess you're on your own. Know your role.

Kalani, I would never follow you in battle anyways, with the sounds of your problems, you couldn't build and engine if your life depended on it.

And I run head gaskets that don't blow out. I have people here that can actually make better had gaskets for boost.

ginsu417
03-12-2003, 03:37 AM
You already have. You've been nagging me for almost a year now with your crap. If I knew so little, you wouldn't be throwing my name around everywhere you went and emailing me begging me to unblock you from my instant messenger. If I knew so little about building motors, I wouldn't be pushing 3 times the factory horsepower. And you obviously haven't built enough performance blocks to know that if you're not breaking parts, you're not making enough power. So go ahead and flame me. Everyone else here knows who the real gurus are.

Blackboost, take our posts off this message board, I would erase mine, but I can't. I just don't even want to look at them.

And Kalani, a side note. I brung your name everywhere I went because I was proud of what you have became, and I thought that we were teamed up in this. Now I think your just a prick.

Whoa now fellas, obviously these things needed to be said because they came out unexpectedly. I kinda feel like it's all my fault now though. Hopefully you guys can work it out because you both know a good bit about 1.8s.

man... this is the same reason im not going to the MachV board anymore... too much crap inbetween all the topics... cant we just PM each other?... i know its fun to have everyone see arguments, but damn it takes up alot of space when youre trying to get the main topic.

Kalani, you contradicted yourself again. You seem do that most of the time. One head gasket, two head gaskets, one head gasket, two head gaskets. T3/T4 Hybrid, T3, T3/T4 hybrid blah blah blah, contradicting over and over and over. Noone can undersatnd what the hell your saying because you contradict yourself.

Kalani, I haven't been owned. You yet to see what I can do, and your timing faq, where you told me it was wrong, is right here in my Haynes book where it says I am right. So how about you take a book, and read it, and leave my FAQ's alone.
