I have searched but have yet to find any information on this method.

Why not just remove the housing around the actual air filter and just leaving that filter in open air?
You can still have your airflow sensor hooked up and running, just make sure to support the air filter and hose?

Why go through all the trouble of removing the metal cover, cutting a hole, and reinstalling it?

because then you wont be like me and have your intake tube bungied to the car. ;) the only real problem is that sometimes the filter doesn't seal to the top of the aircan and you can let some air that shouldn't be there in. if you do it be careful, i have done a few different mods to mine and after going through not having a can on there with the stock tube, not having the can on there and a metal tube, and having the can on there with the snorkus removed, i have come to the conclusion that there is little to be gained from intake mods to the 1.8. the only advantages to doing mods like this that i can see is a reduction in air turbulence but the moment those rad fans kick on you have turbulence. but it sounds awesome with no aircan:D

happy tuning

wel, if there is an issue with the gasket not sealing with just the air can installed, then try using some gasket sealer or add a second gasket. :)

all you have to do is cut everything off of the air can except the oval part at the top that hold the filter to the lid and at least one of the things that bolt it to the car. it is really easy an if you have all the tools can be done in under an hour. the metal that the air can is made out of is really thin so if you have a good saw it will cut through it very quickly. While you are doing this dont forget to remove the silencer from the mas. It will give you some slight power gains but not much on a stock engine. if you are planning on doing more mods your car will need the extra air flow you are giving it. just watch out for the edges of the new air can they are very sharp.

Well what I actually did is replace the air filter and leave the housing off. In addition, I rebent the latches that hold the outer canaster on so they hold the air filter on tight.

I did this and left the outer canaster off after removing it and just let the airfilter in open air.

I did remove the silencer from the intake as well. It sounds a little "meaner" if a mean sound is possible from the 1.8 :)

When you rev the engine you can hear the intake taking a gulp of air and you can hear the pressure release again when you shut of the engine

I did the cut everything off down to the ring mod. I did have the one bracket on there but it broke so its now held with some good 16 guage wire in place. When I did mine I used the torch and cut it down to nothin and painted it dark blue and threw it on there. Good airflow upgrade for a 1.8 is a 2.0 stock intake and MAS. Theyre bigger.

I just ordered a pace setter catback exaust as well. From what I have read so far they seem to be decent.
Eventually I will put an actual K&h or injen intake on as well instead of the stock airfilter without the canaster. Probably wont be much different if any..

will the 2.0t MAS work on the 1.8?

Yes, and no.

Yes, it will fit and you could MAKE it work

No, it is not a drop-in replacement, and will require modifications to your car to function properly.

What the hell?? Theres no making it work period - it works with nothin else done to it. Im running a 2.0 MAS and Intake Pipe and the mods are nill to do that except just do the intake free mods. Just use the PCV hose that they use on the 2.0 intake and cross it over to the valve cover and then your done. Lemme get pics so you can believe me now... easy as pie.

The MAS sensors are not the same. And while your car may be running with a 2.0 MAS sensor, that doesn't mean it's getting the proper air/fuel mixture. You can put in the 2.0's injectors too and it'll run - but you probably wouldn't notice the difference until you got your car on a dyno. I mean, If you were an auto manufacturer, would you spend the extra thousands to develop and manufacture two seperate MAS sensors to go in the same car if you didn't think it was necessary?

yeah they arent the same as ive said before that the 2.0 is bigger than the 1.8 and has a little different design but differences are slight. At any rate it works, didnt change anything that I notice, and so that works for me. Next thing I may do is get 2.0 injectors and see if that overall changes anything.

Interesting idea. Let us know how that goes.

The only physical difference between a 2.0 NT mas and the ones on the 1.8 is the size of the air tubes that are below the metered section. The ones on the 2.0 are a little bit bigger, but not that big as some of you think.

Do you want to hear something funny??
The mas from the 88-92 1.5 mirages/hyundais is almost the same mas as the one on the DSM cars. The only thing different in them is that they have one of the air tubes blocked off. To make it work on either motor (1.8 or 2.0NT), you just have to open up that air tube with a drill bit or dremel and that's it. It is the same thing and works the same.

Now...
The mas on the 1G 2.0 turbo cars is a little bit different. It will not work on a 2.0NT car unless some rewiring(it has more out pins going to it), ECU and injector change is made.
