I was on a 30 minute trip to go to a friends, and my speedometer stopped working... ok.. cable.. no problem... well, when i took my dash apart i decided to stick some indiglo gauges in there. ok.. so thats irrelavant.... anywho... i took the dash out, and watched the cable spin as i drove it to the junkyard (i lost a screw and had to get another) i was like..wtf? huh.. mustya have just un-seated itself out of the cluster.. well to make a long story longer, i put the dash back on, and it started moving (speedo gauge) for a second.. then quit.... then it wouldnt move again... does this sound like a bad speedo cable, or speedo gear? i kinda wanna have it in my head before i take it all apart this weekend... gotta get the car inspected next month... thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Ok, I know nothing about that

But it sounds to me that the motor is going bad because it isn't strong enough to turn the speedometer...

Just my guess.

Bad cable. Changed mine last month. Gotta order from the dealer, it's a proprietary part - the cable and housing and that nasty plastic thing that snaps into the back of the odometer. We were able to rig up a generic cable in the housing but it doesn't work as well as the factory piece.

The motor that makes the speedomete needle moves.. (Sorry for not specifing)

<edit> Note that, like I said, I don't know about these things. I'm just assuming that it has a motor dedicated to moving the speedometer.</edit>

the speedometer cable runs all the way down to your transmission, and it connects to a gear thats in the tranny... when your tranny spins, it moves that gear which spins the cable all the way back up to your instrument cluster, which moves the speedometer.... i was just trying to figure out which was more likely to fail , the cable or the speedo gear... and does anyone know if the gear is metal, or a plastic one?

The cable breaks first. No lubrication in the housing.

Your drive gear is fine, the cable's died.

1Gs don't have a motor driving the speedo needle, it's a conventional speedometer with an aluminum cup surrounding a magnet, driving the needle with eddy current.

This seems to be close to this post so here are my problems,1- speedo needle came off,do I push it back on or do I need a new speedometer? 2- I can hear the cable spinning from the back of the cluster, does it sound like it snapped off or came off of the speedometer ,before all this happened the needle was jumping around alot. Sorry for being a long post.

Thanks in advance
