I am planning on replacing the valve cover gasket tomorrow. Base on the factory service manual and the Haynes manual, it seems like a simple task: remove the valve cover, wash it, remove old gasket/plug, put in new gasket/plug, apply sealant, install cover.
Is there anything I should watch out for? Loose parts that can fall into the engine?

Sorry, doesn't target the 1.8's. Sounds like a good checklist though.

I tried to pull the valve cover off last night. It was quite easy . . . except . . . the right side (crank shaft pully side) is caught between the valves inside and the pully guide/mount/thingy . . . grrrr . . . Suggestions?

Just move it side to side and up and down for a little bit and it will come out.

I had more time to mess around with it today. Apparently you are right. I had to wiggle it around a bit for it to come out. And then I had to wiggle it a bit to get it back in. Thanks.
