Yesterday I was driving home and stopped at a gas station and when I went back to start my car the car wouldn't start. I heard a clicking noise(though it sounded like starter). Got bump started and got it home. The next morning I went out and the car started fine. I went down the road turned the car off to go in to the store and the car wouldn't start again. When I was trying turning on the car the lights all went dimand I heard a slight grinding sound. Got another bump and got home. So when I got home I took out the battery and the starter and took them to the auto parts store and the said that both of them are fine and that it may be my battery terminals so I cleaned my battery terminals with a wire brush. The car still won't start what should I do, or what could it be? Thanks

Do you have a MT model? If so, you should try disconnecting the clutch start switch. It's at the white connector at top of the clutch pedal.;)

my 1.8 had the same problem, it turned out i did indeed need a new starter as the solenoid unit on top was dirty or something, in any case id just beat on with a file until the car turned over (it did the clicking thing just as you described) and i can see how taking it to a shop and the solenoid deciding to conduct correctly would make them think the unit is ok. try getting a long file or something and taking it with you and if the car dies tap on the solenoid (its a gold colored cylindrical shaped thing on top of the starter) just be careful not to hit anything else in the process, im convinced i fried my ecu because i hit the firewall and i got a big fat arc of electricity, and my car never started again, cause i fried to ecu. anyway, just something to think about.

Hmmm, you know, when the starter fails lights don't go dim. The battery checks out, from what you wrote, so that rules that out. Sounds like your battery isn't getting a charge. What charges the battery? ...
...The alternator!
However, these cars have a lot of electronics. So that's just my opinion. :o

i had the *EXACT* same problem, never touched the alternator, in fact i ran more than 1100watts out of my trunk and never blew an alternator on my 1.8.

check the fuse thats for the alternator, it took me awhile just to find the prolblem because i didn't know there was a fuse and i saw it in the fuse box and it was blown. i still don't know what caused the fuse to blow though.
